Organizing youth work(ers) through the paradox of play

A recent focus among communication scholars, the study of contradiction and paradox illuminates the inherent irrationality of organizing. The following case study examines how youth labor – cast as play – functions as a series of tensions and contradictions in the day-to-day construction of work(er) between adults and youth. Mirroring the popular reality TV show, The Apprentice, the program under study communicated contradictory messages about youth work(ers) in terms of: (1) proving/discounting oneself as worker, (2) demanding confidence while orchestrating uncertainty and (3) playing along versus being playful in the organizationally prescribed framework, effectively dismissing work(ers) essential to the functioning of the organization. My analysis demonstrates how the framing of youth’s work as a game delegitimized youth work(ers) resulting in potentially exploitative working conditions, and serves as a call to communication scholars to better account for youth as workers, while pointing to similar implications for other types of provisional and contingent work(ers).  相似文献

语言的模糊性是幽默产生的前提。概念模糊(包括一词多义和一音多义)是幽默运作的机制之一。幽默至少含有两层意义,一是听者的期待,二是听者没有预期、或期待落空。幽默的语言模式包括准备、乖讹或不和谐和消解三个阶段。幽默的人际角色包括说话者,听话者,嘲笑者和被嘲笑者,但并非一一对应。幽默是发起人或说话者在面临某种"威胁"(包括面子或情感不快)时,攻击或毁谤他人,反败为胜,变弱势为优势,或自嘲以缓解威胁,并给被嘲笑者保留一定面子的策略。  相似文献   

Ugandan health libraries in the 21st century: key initiatives and challenges

This article is part of a series in this regular feature which looks at new directions in health science libraries. This paper highlights new initiatives aimed at ensuring health libraries can contribute to the development of Uganda in the 21st century and the challenges facing libraries. It stresses that for libraries to be successful they need to form networks and collaborations for resource sharing; take advantage of the benefits of information technology; computerise their library systems; as well as invest in the development of staff. The paper highlights the main challenge facing the library service as inadequate funding both from government for public‐funded health libraries and the private sector (for privately funded health libraries). The paper concludes that, despite the bottlenecks brought about by inadequate funding, Ugandan health libraries have taken positive steps to support health research and education, as well as patient care, not just for Uganda, but for the whole of the East African region. Medical library services in Switzerland: catching up with EBM

The feature is a part of the series about medical library services in various countries. It gives an overview of medical library services to support research, education and clinical practice in Switzerland. Data were collected by means of an online survey and set in the wider context of the Swiss healthcare system. Key findings are that library services, including support by academic librarians, are provided to health care staff in hospitals – both university and others, while there is no information service infrastructure to serve the large number of GPs and specialists who mostly run their own practice. The authors recommend that – if the health authorities take EBM seriously – information services should be introduced for these small practices. J.M.  相似文献
